The history of Kyoto Montsuki Black dyeing dates back to the Heian period, when black garments were mainly worn by Buddhist priests and samurai as formal attire. Traditionally, garments were first hand-dyed in red or indigo before being overdyed to a deep black using a natural pigment extracted from betel nuts (binroji).

Kurozome involves repeatedly applying the base dyes before introducing the black pigment. These layers of color are built up gradually to achieve an exceptionally deep, rich black. This meticulous process demands the expertise of Kyoto Montsuki’s craftsmen, who dye each garment by hand while carefully adjusting the temperature of the dye bath throughout the process.
